| Below is a list of free
web hosting providers. Most providers provide the service for free by
placing a banner ad or pop-up ad on your pages. Some providers don't
place adds on your site so depending on the services you need they are
great! When selecting a free web host, you need to determine what services you need. For example, some providers only allow basic pages to be uploaded. For example, they don't accept ASP pages or provide a CGI-BIN location for scripts. Others provide support for ASP, database connectivity, the database itself, ASP, pearl, CGI, flash etc. Other sites don't allow you to upload multimedia files like MP3, RM or WAV, where other providers do. Some even provide real audio server support. Same situation with FrontPage server extensions. Another service to look at is e-mail. Some provide POP3 (which means you can connect using a program like outlook) while others provide a web based e-mail, have e-mail forwarding only or don't offer any e-mail services. If you want to place ads on your site, check the terms of the user agreement, because some of the free providers do not allow this. One thing some people might not think is a big deal, is how you can upload your files. If your site has a decent number of files, using a web browser to upload the files can take a long time, so you would probably want to use FTP to connect. One word of caution, when looking for free webhosting, make sure there aren't any hidden fees. A lot of companies offer free web hosting if you register a domain through them or have other hidden fees. I tried to filter out any site with hidden charges in this list. With that said, if you are going to work on building a site, it may be worth protecting your web identity by registering a domain name. The cheapest domain registry I have found is godaddy. They offer cheap domain names and also have cheap web hosting and have a very good reputation. I tried to put most of the items you might want to compare in the grid below.
